Traditional Physical Education model: Physical education (PE) is commonly defined as an educational process that promotes holistic student development through structured physical activities. This student-centred approach employs physical activities and sports to enhance educational outcomes. Present framework of PE: While physical development in children can be objectively measured, assessing mental and social development through physical activities alone remains challenging. Mainstream PE may sustain interest in physical activity for a limited period, but it does not necessarily foster lifelong engagement in scientifically informed physical activity behaviours. Decades of traditional PE have not succeeded in cultivating essential physical activity behaviours globally, as evidenced even in leading sporting nations such as the United States and China. Aligning the PE framework with the Education process: Integrating PE into the broader educational process is necessary to restore its prestige and practical value. According to prominent philosophers, education should facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills, enabling individuals to become self-determined and intrinsically motivated learners. Accordingly, PE should be structured to impart knowledge and skills related to physical activities and their scientific foundations, thereby addressing psychological and social dimensions and fostering intrinsic motivation for active and healthy lifestyles. Physical literacy framework as the main lever for PE: Physical literacy, encompassing the knowledge, skills, awareness, and motivation required for sustained engagement in physical activity, should serve as the foundation of the PE curriculum. Therefore, the definition of PE warrants reconsideration.
